A convenient alternative to braces, Invisalign uses a series of removable aligners custom-designed for each patient. Aligner trays are made of smooth, clear plastic, and they gently shift teeth as they are worn. A new set of aligners is put in place every two weeks until treatment is complete. The method effectively shifts teeth with no attached metal or wires to cause inconvenient mouth abrasions.
While treatment duration varies for each patient, most adults can complete the treatment in about a year. For teens, the time is comparable to that of braces, but results can often be seen much sooner, thanks to the absence of metal brackets or wires. For the most effective and timely results, aligners should be removed only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. Aligners should be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day throughout the course of treatment.
